Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why was this training originally written?
  • The author of the training is a Senior Supervisor herself and wanted her team of Supervisors to perform more efficiently.
  • What makes this training different from other training?
  • The fact that is carried out 'in house' by a presenter that knows your school well.
  • How does the cost of this training compare to other off-site training?
  • Our costs are kept as low as possible by providing all five training modules in one book. If you divide the total of each book by five you will find that it works out to be only a few pounds per Supervisor, per training session.
  • What if my Senior Lunchtime Supervisor hasn't carried out training before?
  • Your Senior Supervisor should familiarise themselves with the manual and the training modules before attempting to present the training. There are guidance notes throughout the training modules to help them present it. There are also questions that can be used to help to extend discussions and ensure the Supervisors understand clearly. This is why the Senior Supervisor gets their own manual so that they understand the training thoroughly before they deliver the sessions.
  • What is the duration of the training sessions?
  • Each of the five modules can be completed in 1-2 hours. Some of the sessions can be broken down into two parts, if that suits you better.
  • What does each module cover?
  • Module 1 -Social and Emotional development and Behaviour.
    Module 2 - Supervisor Skills.
Module 3 - Practical strategies to improve the whole lunchtime.
Module 4 - Organised games and wet play activities.
Module 5 – School Policies and their relevance to the Lunchtime Supervisor.
  • How are the modules laid out?
  • Each module has objectives, information on the particular area, an activity to ensure Supervisors understand the information and a summary of the main points. Within each module there is a chance for discussion and debate and a chance for the Supervisors to put forward their own ideas. When they are involved in the decision making process Supervisors will feel valued and you will have happier staff.
  • Why should I choose this training method over another training method?
  • Consider the fact that every school is individual and needs tailored training to suit its needs. Other training is usually in one area such as; 'dealing with challenging behaviour', 'children's development' or 'playground games' etc. S.O.S. training modules cover a multitude of areas that have been put together to form a complete training package. S.O.S. training doesn't only improve the skills of the Supervisors in many areas but looks at the lunchtime as a whole. While providing Supervisors with better skills and knowledge it also works on improving the running and organisation of the lunchtime. Within the training there are sections for improving communication and continuity throughout the school, as regards the Supervisors role. The training also aims to improve the Supervisors self esteem and confidence, therefore you get more effective staff.
  • How will my school benefit?
  • Any school can benefit from this training. Senior Supervisors become more knowledgeable with many new ideas and initiatives at their disposal. Supervisors gain knowledge and skills. Self esteem within the team is improved. Communication between lunchtime staff and the rest of the school should improve.
